Decorating Small Spaces

Decorating Small Spaces

Furnishing your house is a great way to make your home feel like a personal space. Furnishings are also not permanent and replaceable allowing you to redecorate should you get bored. However, accessorize too heavily and you may find your home too cramped and cluttered for your liking.

When decorating small spaces, efficiency is key. What furnishings can deliver the most impact to your overall design but take up the least amount of space. This can be a rug or carpet on the floor, an extra pillow or two on the couch in contrasting colors or a nice set of curtain drapes.

It also helps to use neutral colored backgrounds. On neutral tones, your brighter, bolder colored knick-knacks can have more of a visual impact and you'll require less of them to make your statement. Being able to use smaller furnishings or less of them to make the same visual statement will definitely make your home feel less cluttered. An example would be a set of wooden blinds and curtain sheer on a cream colored wall like this one:

Lastly, if you can't part with your knick-knacks, then store them! There are plenty of visually unoffensive storage options out there. This solution is much easier on your wallet as you can always bring those old knick-knacks out or mix and match with new ones.
