Make the Most out of Your Window Treatments Part 2

Make the Most out of Your Window Treatments Part 2

Staying on curtains, here is tip number 2: Let your curtains hang low

A very common mistake is buying ready-made curtains without making sure it fits the height of the wall. Properly fitting curtains should hover no more than 5cm above the floor and should not puddle too much on the floor. However, this means there is very little margin for error and you may find yourself having to buy a taller curtain and cutting it to size. This is why having your window dressings custom made is so important; it saves you the unnecessary hassle of having to cut/modify drapes and blinds that are too large. All Onna products are made to measure for this reason and we will do the measuring on-site for you to minimize the chance of miscommunication.
Most drapes look best when they hang all the way to the floor even when the windowsill is high off the ground. Another mistake is to not have long enough curtains or worse, if they stop right at the windowsill. This makes your room look short and busy because your windows will appear wider without the space below occupied, or the wall will look too segmented having too many changes in patterns, textures or color up and down the wall.

Tip number 3: Layering Window Treatments

Windows in a space arranged by a designer often incorporates at multiple layers of treatments for the windows. Often times this involves a blind or shade framed on either side by drapes, usually in contrasting textures, colors or patterns. This enhances both form and function, the windows become a focal point in the design of the space and the windows now have added functionality in terms of better control for natural light penetration, room insulation and privacy.
However, too much layering is detrimental to the aesthetic of your space. Having too many fabrics framing a window will decrease the total amount of natural light penetration into the room and will also make the space feel smaller and more cluttered. Functionally, each additional layer of treatments would also not have as much of an impact as the first layer, which downgrades the role that treatment plays to more of an aesthetic one. Therefore, it is important to carefully consider which window treatments you decide to install on the same window.
